HEROES WANTED:

As soon as you were old enough, you packed up your things, said goodbye to your parents, and set off for new frontiers. Your goals lay beyond the distant horizon, and your dream of one day becoming a hero fueled each of your steps. You traveled for many days, many nights, until eventually, you arrived Here. Parched and a little confused, you find yourself approaching a bustling city hidden in the middle of the desert. As you trail along the winding circular paths of the town, dodging speeding cyclists whizzing by, you come across a sign outside of a tavern.

“Heroes Wanted. Inquire Within”.

Today, your adventure begins.

Nightcrawlers is an immersive theme camp that strives to bring together and build community for the nerds, geeks, cosplayers, gamers, dungeon masters, adventurers, and heroes of the Playa.

It serves as the Guild Hall for PlayaRPG, where visitors are transported to another world once they enter the threshold of our camp.

About

Nightcrawlers Art Collective

Nightcrawlers began as an anime convention social partying group, a place where fun-minded convention goers can connect with one another and meet up for parties or make new friends at local conventions. As the group grew larger, it was apparent that many in the group exhibited the same sort of creative or adventurous flare that would flourish and thrive at Burning Man. One by one, group members were drunkenly recruited at convention parties to join on their first quest, a first-time theme camp at Youtopia, the San Diego Regional Burning Man event in 2017. The Nightcrawlers camp was born. None of us really knew what we were doing, but we came together and created something amazing and wonderful. Our first time as a camp was a huge success, and we returned to Youtopia in 2018 a little more prepared. Now, 2020 approaches and we’re ready to take on the big leagues and try our hand at bringing the magic we’ve brought to Youtopia and brought to our respective Burning Man camps in the past to our home away from home. We’re in the process of applying for placement this year, but regardless of whether or not we’re placed, we still will be bringing our theme camp to this year’s burn.

Our group is based out of Los Angeles and consists of a handful of veteran burners, all in some way, shape, or form, related to nerdy or geeky pursuits. Our goal is to be a beacon for nerds, geeks, and gamers from all across Black Rock City as a place for them to gather, meet other like-minded folk, and set out on adventures together. Nightcrawlers will serve as the new home of PlayaRPG, which will be its 5th year running in Black Rock City.

PlayaRPG is an interactive, playa-wide, week-long role playing game. In it, players (heroes!) choose their class and receive quests at the camp. The goal of the game is for them to complete and turn in five quests without losing all of their Health Points over the course of the week. Each quest gets significantly more difficult depending on the level, varying from quests that ask players to find certain things, or pick up moop, to find a hidden art piece in deep playa, all the way to finding and visiting other camps and participating in their activities. We work hard to have the quests and plotline reflect the Ten Principles, encouraging players to not only absorb the principles, but to actually act on them. It was created as a way to call out to all of the nerds and geeks and gamers of Burning Man, letting them know that they’re not alone, but also as an inclusive way to include others who may be unfamiliar with role-playing, LARPing, gaming, or geeky stuff in a fun, unique way at Burning Man. The game is purposely made to be inclusive to anyone at the Burn, so that you don’t need prior knowledge in order to play.

PlayaRPG was created to fill the nerdy void the creator felt during her first year, but also for a city (albeit a temporary one), our communities could be doing more to interact with each other. Often times at the Burn it feels as though each camp holds itself as an autonomous unit, and rather than a network of camps, many times exploration feels like walking between separate silos, each camp its own world. PlayaRPG creates an opportunity for a more networked city structure, linking camps to one another so that they’re working together, rather than separately. As such, each year we reach out to camps to ask them to participate in PlayaRPG as quest locations, where we send players to go and visit camps and people they may not normally have stopped at, linking the camps of Burning Man into a Playa-wide network of activity and gaming.

Each year we’ve ran PlayaRPG, it’s gotten better and better. Having a whole themed camp to use as home base, along with engaged camp members will only serve to make this year the best yet! As such, any members of Nightcrawlers will be expected to help coordinate and run PlayaRPG in various capacities, both prior to the Burn and during the week of the Burn.

You can find PlayaRPG’s digital presence below, where there are some photos, images, and descriptions, but not enough, and what’s there barely scrapes the surface.

Membership Expectations

As a Nightcrawler, you will be expected to help with build and projects, help with pre-burn fundraising efforts, packing pre-burn, loading up the trucks and vehicles, camp duties throughout the week, help with PlayaRPG and other camp events, assisting striking the camp on Monday, and help unloading the truck and vehicles upon returning to LA. You will be expected to be in attendance until the last bit of moop is picked up from our campsite and the last trash bag loaded into our cars. We expect you to stay until we are finished.

YOU WILL NOT BE INVITED BACK IF YOU LEAVE EARLY.

As such, you’re also expected to just generally be a good Burner, and a devoted follower and advocate of the Ten Principles. At the end of the week, camp trash will be distributed between the vehicles of camp members, each taking responsibility for a little of the shared waste we produced throughout the week. What’s included in dues?

We plan to provide a communal shaded lounge area, a bar, a shower setup (bring your own water), a kitchen setup (bring your own propane), a close, tight knit nerdy community, the freedom to create your own event, the ability to help create a brand new theme camp, and the knowledge that you’re contributing to the overall connectivity of Burning Man itself.

We make no money off our camp mates, nor do we do everything for you. We expect everyone to participate in our camp throughout the week. And we also expect you participate in having a lot of fun outside the camp as well. We aim to operate as an adventurer’s guild, not as a random assortment of strangers.

We’re all unique, creative individuals with our own passions and interests, but we also all agree to work together to create this camp and our events, to make the camp into a safe, caring place to return to, one where you’ll always find a friendly face and the comfort of your home base.

We are a participatory camp. This means that EVERYONE in our camp is asked to participate in creating a fun & safe atmosphere. We are also a camp that requires members to connect with one another and to reach out and make new friendships or build on old ones.

If you are looking to park your RV/Tent/Yurt or sleeping bag on our real estate while you disappear into the dust, happy with just being a spectator or feel the need to bring drama to our family, please look elsewhere.

How does it work? We share the costs evenly through the dues we raise and we all pitch in to build and run the camp during the week. We have an effective roster system to help you structure your week.

Our camp plans to arrive in the morning on Sunday of the event. Our goal is to have the whole camp set up and functional by our Monday night annual PlayaRPG kickoff party.

When you arrive, you'll be expected to jump straight in to ensure that we're many steps closer to having the camp both functional and looking beautiful by the time Monday night party comes around.

CAMP MEETINGS

We will have a few all-camp meetings throughout the week of Burning Man, our first being Monday afternoon.

Please ensure you’ve arrived at camp no later than Monday afternoon. This is an essential requirement as it's your chance to meet everyone, learn about the camp, how things work and check out the final roster of when you'll be working during the week. Then, as a group, we visit our neighbors and introduce ourselves and make some new friends, while also figuring out what we’ve got around us, since everyone is just setting up and really enthusiastic about the week ahead. We will share our first camp meal together that evening, before we setup for the kickoff party and ensure everything is ready for our attendees.

One of the nights of the week we will have one other pre-arranged potluck-style camp dinner. Details are to be discussed and attendance will be optional, but STRONGLY encouraged.

Saturday night we’ll arrange to meet up before the man burns, so anyone who wants to go together as a camp is more than welcome to join, although this is in no way, shape, or form mandatory.

Then on Sunday afternoon we’ll have one last meeting to talk about how and when we break down the camp. This is another critical and mandatory meeting where full attendance is requested.

MOOPing. MOOP: Matter Out Of Place

We ask that every camp member develop MOOP eyes, both around our camp and all over the Playa . One of the 10 principles of the Burning Man is to Leave No Trace. Every sequin, every feather, every string and wood chip etc ... all must be picked up and taken with us.

TAKE RESPONSIBILITY FOR YOUR OWN WASTE AND WHAT OTHERS MAY HAVE LEFT BEHIND:

  1. Remove all packaging from any supplies you've purchased for the burn BEFORE you pack it - cardboard boxes, plastic wrap, single use bags, etc.

  2. Carry around a MOOP bag to make this easier (around camp as well as on Playa). Gallon-size ziplocks are great for this

  3. Keep a personal trash bag in your yurt/tent and plan to pack out this bag as well as at least one bag of camp trash.

Consent

Burning Man is an unusual, exciting place full of vibrant people, and you're quite likely to find yourself in unusual situations. This is a reminder that none of the following constitute consent:

  • "sexy" or skimpy attire, toplessness, or full nudity

  • flirtation or past consensual experiences

  • intoxication or unconsciousness

  • silence or the absence of "no"

  • getting consent without providing pertinent information that affects the consenting individual

Consent must be vocal, enthusiastic, ongoing throughout an event/activity, and may be revoked at any time for any reason. This applies to sexual encounters as well and non-sexually touching another person's body or their personal belongings. Always get and give clear consent to avoid ambiguous situations.
